Too often, health is thought to be inversely correlated to weight: if our clients would just follow the meal plans and the required exercise, their excess weight will magically disappear and they will finally be slim and healthy…
In her course ‘Empowered Eating for Health Coaches’, Michelle Yandle shines the spotlight on a different approach to health, weight-independent. An approach that lets go of the self-fulfilling cycle of nutrition restrictions, failure, followed by shame, guilt, and binging, followed by more restrictions. An approach to move away from yoyo dieting and instead offering a normalization of an individual’s relationship with food.
As a clinical nutritionist, if there is anything I learned from working with clients over the past years is that although most clients come to lose weight, the so called ‘non-scale-victories’ are what keeps them motivated. Those NSV are very diverse: having more energy to play with the grandchildren after a day at work, sleeping better and waking refreshed, enjoying food again, fitting a favourite dress again although their weight has not changed, looking forward to a picnic instead of dreading going.
For me, this course filled in many of the remaining puzzle pieces in my quest to help clients feel better about themselves.
